Chapter Six

Dad, what about the Coast Guard?” I said urgently. “What about them helping? Should you call them again?”

My dad shook his head. “The call is in but they’re all tied up over Martha’s Vineyard way with that ferry. If it’s bad, they might scramble out a helo, but the rescue boats are too far gone.”

A helicopter? I gulped.

“Keep moving that light around out there, Jen!” he called. I slid it from side to side and up and down, doing arcs and lines. “And don’t worry. The guard knows we’ve got the Free Spirit. We’re good. Let’s just find these guys now.”

“Hello! Hello!” I called urgently as we cruised silently through the thick fog. “Hello! Hello!”

Wait! I thought I heard something.

“Dad!”

“Shh! I heard it, too!” He got on the radio. “Free Spirit, this is the Kerry Marie. We think we’re close. Shout if you can hear me.” He cut the radio and engine and we listened. I could actually feel my ears moving on my head as they pricked up, attuning to any possible sound.

“Help! Mayday! Help!”

I whipped my head around to look at my dad. “It sounded like it was coming from over there!” I pointed to my left and my dad nodded and restarted the engine, gently turning the wheel a bit to the left.

“Hello! Hello!” I continued to call.

“Help! Help! Over here!” Their calls were getting louder as the smell of burning plastic got even more acrid. I pinched my nostrils shut with my free hand.

“Whoa!” called my dad as he cut the engine and backspun the wheel. The Free Spirit was suddenly right next to us and we had to back away a bit to avoid hitting it. My dad threw our boat into reverse and our engines roared and strained at the gear change, like wild diesel animals.

“Oh thank God!” a woman’s voice called. I lowered my light to point down onto the water so it wouldn’t blind anyone.

“Free Spirit! We’re here!” called my dad.

“Kerry Marie?” called a man’s voice.

“The one and only!” said my dad.

Their boat was sitting high at a really weird angle. It looked like a child’s drawing of a boat, with the boat completely out of the water and all the waves smacking its sides below. Except that it looked like it was about to tip over. My dad pulled away to circle the boat and the woman on board became a little hysterical.

“Wait! Don’t go away! Where are you going?” she cried in a panic.

“Helen, calm down right now!” said the man sharply. I didn’t blame him for being mad. Her cries were terrifying me!

“I just want to see where I should pull up to take you on,” said my dad calmly. “Don’t worry. You’ve got a little bit of time still.”

The woman started wailing again and I heard a kid say, “Mom! Stop!” in a pleading voice.

The back side of the boat was even scarier because now I could see where the smoke was coming from in the console. I heard my dad’s sharp intake of breath as he saw the smoke.
